Change of Management at the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology

Angelika Fleckinger, Ötzi expert and previous director of the museum, took over management of provincial museums in May 2022 and consequently became director general of the ten South Tyrolean provincial museums. From 1 November 2022 her successor at the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology will be Elisabeth Vallazza, also an archaeologist and deputy director since 2020.

Fleckinger has managed the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology since it was first founded in 1998, initially as coordinator and since 2005 as director. She studied prehistory and early history and wrote numerous popular science publications about the Iceman, also passing her knowledge on in countless lectures all over the world. Her books have made Ötzi known to a wide audience.

From 1 November 2022 her successor will be Elisabeth Vallazza, archaeologist and marketing expert, who won the public selection process for management of the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology. Since 2009 she has been responsible for marketing at the museum, managed various teams responsible for visitor services, and has been involved in shaping the museum’s logistical and economic fortunes for years.

The entire Archaeology Museum team congratulates and wishes both directors much joy and success in their new endeavors!
