Record number of visitors 2024

In the past year, 2024, a record number of people admired the Iceman and his Copper Age equipment. For the first time, we welcomed 310,744 visitors to the museum. South Tyrolean school classes were also represented in greater numbers than ever before.

The permanent exhibition about the Iceman and his Copper Age equipment continues to fascinate people from all over the world. Since it opened in 1998, more than 6.5 million people have visited the museum. The majority of international visitors came from other European countries. The country with the highest share of visits was Germany with 41%, followed by Italy with 30%, Austria: 9%, the rest of Europe: 15%, non-European countries: 5%.

The museum is responding to increasing interest from visitors every year by offering the option for online reservations. This allows the museum to make full use of the exhibition area’s visitor capacity, which is only 1,200 m2 in size.

“The months with the highest number of visitors were – as usual – July and August, each with just over 40,000 guests. However now the museum is reaching its capacity limits at many times throughout the year,” Elisabeth Vallazza, director of the museum, commented on the figures. “We are glad that the provincial government is making concrete progress with the construction of the new museum. With a capacity of 300 people, the current building is not sufficient for the increasing demand.”
