Pride Month 2025

A closer look at diversity: Pride Month at the Museum of Archaeology

This June will be colorful and exciting at the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology: Four new “archaeological interventions” will enrich the permanent exhibition from June 10 until the end of the month – the museum’s contribution to international Pride Month.

Old graves take center stage and bring up new questions: Who was buried how? And what does this reveal about gender roles in the past? It was long believed that swords were associated with males, while jewelry was with females. However modern analyses of DNA and tooth enamel often tell a very different story – and challenge our preconceived notions.

The small exhibits invite you to take a closer look. They show that history does not follow rigid role patterns – neither in the past nor today.
Through this initiative the museum is setting an example for diversity, visibility, and inclusion. As part of the South Tyrol Provincial Museums, it makes it clear that museums are more than places dedicated to the past – they also help shape the present.

You can find out more about the initiatives of other provincial museums here (available only in Italian and German).
