Stay cool!

Südtiroler Archäologiemuseum

A guided tour around Ötzi the Iceman’s refrigerated cell

It stays cool here even when it’s warm outside…

Once a year the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology opens Ötzi’s conservation area to the public, offering an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the unique cooling system that preserves the Iceman – the world's oldest naturally preserved wet mummy.

Edda Guareschi, the current conservator of the Iceman, is a pathologist specializing in forensic pathology and forensic medicine. She provides a brief guided tour explaining the world's only refrigeration system for a wet mummy.

She also explains how the Iceman is preserved, why the mummy is regularly moistened, and what challenges have to be overcome to ensure that Ötzi remains intact for future generations.

Before or after the brief tour you can visit the entire museum on your own until 7:00pm.

The guided tour of the refrigerated cell is included in admission. Space is limited and reservations are recommended by phone 0471 320118 (Mo-Fr 9am-12pm) or by mail events@iceman.it

Meeting point at the ticket desk: at 4:45pm. The tour will start at 5:00pm.

Note: An additional guided tour in German and Italian will take place Thursday July 22, 2027 at 5:00pm and at 5:45pm.
