Stay cool!

23.07.2026 | 16:45 - 19:00
Südtiroler Archäologiemuseum

A guided tour around the Iceman’s refrigerated cell

It stays cool here even when it’s warm outside…

Once a year the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology opens Ötzi’s conservation area to the public. How does the one-of-a-kind cooling cell for a wet mummy work? The conservators offer a glimpse behind the scenes.

The area where Ötzi’s cooling cell and conservation system are housed, only opens to the public once a year.

Speakers:

Edda Guareschi, pathologist and curator for the Iceman, along with Oliver Peschel, forensic pathologist and president of the scientific advisory board for Ötzi, provide brief guided tours explaining the world’s only refrigeration system for a wet mummy. They also explain how the Iceman is preserved, why the mummy is regularly moistened, and what challenges have to be overcome to ensure that Ötzi remains intact for future generations.

Before or after the brief tour you can visit the entire museum on your own until 7:00pm.
The guided tour of the refrigerated cell is included in admission.

Space is limited and reservations are recommended by phone 0471 320112 or 320145 or by mail office@iceman.it

Meeting point: At the ticket counter at 4:45pm. The tour will start at 5:00pm.

Note: Additional guided tours of the Iceman's refrigerated preservation cell will take place in German and Italian on 9 July 2026 at 5:00 p.m. and 5:45 p.m., respectively.
