Special exhibition: 20 years from Ötzi’s discovery

From the 1st of March 2011 the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology is entirely dedicated to the Iceman, by presenting the special exhibition Ötzi20. Thanks to resounding success with the public, the special exhibition will be extended by a full year,  until 13 January 2013.

The famous Chalcolithic mummy and his equipment have attracted the interest of many researchers since their discovery 20 years ago. Moreover, Ötzi has been the subject of countless publications, has inspired scientists, artists and esoteric enthusiasts.

Four floors dedicated to Ötzi, the Iceman
An archaeological find that has become a world sensation as well as an important asset for the local economy. The exhibition Ötzi20 is focused on the Iceman and on his impact on scholars and museum’s visitors alike. To mark the occasion the museum space has been totally transformed: on an area of 1,200 sqm, it displays the results of the most recent scientific studies, the often extravagant theories of the media on Ötzi's life and death, together with gadgets, curiosities and many lesser known aspects surrounding this sensational find.

The new reconstruction of Ötzi
The Museum commissioned the Dutch artists Adrie and Alfons Kennis to create a new, naturalistic reconstruction based on scientific principles. His watchful gaze today meets visitors to the Museum, shaping our conceptions of the Stone Age inhabitants of the Alpine regions. Ötzi gives our history a “face” in the truest sense of the word, moving and fascinating people from all over the world.
